About Genevieve
Genevieve Schumacher is a litigation associate whose practice centers on civil rights, representing individuals who have experienced employment discrimination and violations of their constitutional rights by government actors, including mistreatment by law enforcement or in correctional facilities. She has extensive experience litigating complex, high-stakes cases in federal district and appellate courts, and she uses it to help individuals vindicate their rights.
Throughout her career, Genevieve has developed a deep commitment to fighting institutional abuses of power. She believes in the promise of fair and inclusive workplaces for everyone, regardless of ethnicity, race, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or religion. She understands the pain and distress that follows a civil rights violation, and she pairs aggressive litigation with compassionate support that centers each client's narrative and lived experience.
Genevieve started her legal career at Selendy Gay PLLC, a boutique litigation firm in New York City, where she focused on plaintiffs' side impact and class action litigation involving deceptive financial practices, affordable housing, and healthcare access. She then clerked for the Honorable Fern Flanagan Saddler and the Honorable Darlene M. Soltys at the District of Columbia Superior Court.
After clerking, she pursued her passion for civil rights advocacy as a Supervising Attorney and Teaching Fellow in Georgetown University Law Center's Civil Rights Clinic, litigating cases for people facing retaliation and discrimination in employment, education, housing, and access to public facilities and accommodations, as well as victims of police brutality, excessive force, and the denial of medical care in jails and prisons. As a teaching fellow, she taught weekly seminars to aspiring civil rights lawyers on litigation skills and trauma-informed lawyering.
